Starfighters careening through space, dinosaurs rampaging through dense forest, superheroes defending the world against fearsome villains…

The groundbreaking visual effects creations of Industrial Light & Magic have redefined the limits of our imagination for nearly 50 years.

Founded in 1975 by George Lucas, ILM has created some of the most memorable visual effects in history. From the awe-inspiring innovations in the classic Star Wars trilogy to spectacular imagery across hundreds of films since, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Revenant, ILM has always specialized in the unprecedented.

Attracting the finest talent from every corner of the globe, ILM’s team is composed of production teams, technicians, and artists at campuses in five countries (United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and India), collaborating to meet the unique challenges that each new project presents. Many of the resulting innovations have opened up entirely new avenues of expression for filmmakers and storytellers alike, and with ILM’s animation offerings — alongside ILM Art and Technoprops — anything is possible.

Rooted in an ongoing tradition of practical effects, where model environments, miniature spaceships, and stop-motion characters dazzle audiences in disbelief, ILM has also led the foray in computer graphics. From pioneering efforts on films like The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Jurassic Park, to recent entries like Killers of the Flower Moon, Avatar: The Way of Water, and The Creator, and even immersive experiences with ABBA, U2, and KISS, what once were dreams in the mind’s eye have now been brought to life.

In 2020, ILM announced the next phase of its global expansion plan for the company’s virtual production and StageCraft LED volume services. This expansion of services is tied to a proactive initiative for increasing diversity in the industry by combining ILM’s growth in this innovative methodology with a global trainee program geared for underrepresented visual effects talent. In 2022, the ILM StageCraft virtual production tool suite was recognized by the Television Academy with an Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Award. ILM StageCraft has been used on movies and television shows such as The Fabelmans, The Batman, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, How I Met Your Father, black-ish, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Old Man.

With every new challenge, ILM continues to push the envelope…
