Oct 17, 2024

This year marks the fourth edition of the much-anticipated “TOKYO LIGHTS 2024” event, set to take place from Saturday, September 14th, to Monday, September 16th (National Holiday), at the iconic Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery and Rubber-ball Baseball Ground at Meijijingu Gaien. As Tokyo’s premier light festival, TOKYO LIGHTS combines cutting-edge technology, visual arts, and entertainment into an immersive celebration of illumination. For 2024, the festival boasts a star-studded collaboration with the largest VTuber group in Japan, NIJISANJI, featuring their newest unit “AYAKAKI” as the official ambassadors of the event.

One of the standout highlights of this year’s festival is the International Projection Mapping Competition, a renowned global contest showcasing short-form projection works. The competition, which began in Japan in 2012, focuses on captivating projection mappings lasting between one and two minutes. With this year’s theme centered around “Mirror,” 278 entries were received from 56 countries, with 18 finalists from 14 countries battling it out for the top prize of 2 million yen.

Hosted at the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, the competition promises to be a stunning display of visual creativity. The award ceremony, scheduled for September 16th, will be led by famed TV host Harry Sugiyama, alongside actress and newscaster Aki Shibuya, adding an extra layer of star power to the prestigious event.

NIJISANJI’s VTuber group, AYAKAKI, will be front and center, presenting exclusive light shows that blend traditional Japanese culture with cutting-edge technology. Using NIJISANJI’s music as the soundtrack, the show will feature dazzling projection mapping at the Meiji Jingu Gaien Memorial Picture Gallery. Fans of the VTuber culture and newcomers alike will be enthralled by the intricate fusion of light and sound.

The special Star Dance performance will feature approximately 300 drones, choreographed in sync with live performers, creating a breathtaking spectacle of light and movement. With enchanting installations that synchronize music and light, the entire event offers a glimpse into the future of entertainment technology.

The overarching message of TOKYO LIGHTS 2024 is one of hope, creativity, and unity. As light fills the skies of Tokyo, the festival’s installations and shows convey an uplifting vision for the future, inspired by the power of art and innovation. From the 7-meter Eternity Mirror Monolith reflecting the possibilities of tomorrow to the Galaxy Symphony with nearly 10,000 wirelessly controlled FreFlow® lights, every facet of the festival has been carefully crafted to inspire awe and reflection.

For those unable to attend the September event, a second edition of TOKYO LIGHTS will be held in November 2024 at the same venue, offering more opportunities to experience this magical celebration of light.
